HANNOVER Germany – Rwandans living in Germany gathered in the city of Hannover on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day, honoring the achievements, resilience, and leadership of women within the Rwandan community and around the world.

The celebration brought together members of the Rwandan diaspora, families, community leaders, and friends in a warm and vibrant atmosphere that highlighted the central role women play in strengthening families, communities, and societies.

The event  began a day earlier, on March 7, with a community dinner organized by Rwandans living in Hannover. The dinner created a welcoming space where families and friends shared traditional meals, reconnected, and prepared together for the main celebration.

The gathering strengthened bonds among members of the diaspora and reflected the spirit of unity that characterizes the Rwandan community abroad.

Ambassador Highlights Women’s Role in Development

The event was honored by the presence of the Rwandan Ambassador to Germany and his spouse, who joined the community in recognizing the important role of women in national and community development.

In his remarks, the Ambassador emphasized that the advancement of women is closely linked to the progress of any nation.

“International Women’s Day reminds us that the progress of any nation is closely linked to the empowerment of its women. Rwandan women have shown extraordinary resilience and leadership, and their contribution continues to shape a brighter future for our society,” he said.

Growing Opportunities for Rwandans in Germany

Participants also discussed the growing number of Rwandans living in Germany, a trend driven by expanding opportunities for education, training, and employment.

Many Rwandans arrive through legal migration pathways, including university studies, vocational training programs (Ausbildung), employment opportunities, volunteer programs, language-learning initiatives, au pair placements, and family reunification.

Institutions such as Der Sprachen Hub | German Language Academy and the ECL German Exams Center in Rwanda are playing an important role in preparing Rwandans with language skills and information that help them access education and professional opportunities in Germany.

The celebration also highlighted Rwanda’s remarkable achievements in gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Rwanda is globally recognized for having the highest female representation in parliament, with women holding more than 60 percent of parliamentary seats. Women also play key roles across government, business, and civil society.

Strong policies promoting gender equality have enabled women to actively participate in decision-making, economic development, and peacebuilding. Legal frameworks guaranteeing equal rights in areas such as property ownership, education, and employment have further strengthened women’s role in national development.

Recognizing Women in the Diaspora

A special tribute was given to women and girls who are actively promoting the initiative “Rwandan Women in the Germany Diaspora.”

Among those recognized was Madame Mukashema Virginie, praised as a pioneer who has worked to bring Rwandan women together around shared values of patriotism, solidarity, and mutual support.

Her efforts have helped strengthen unity among women in the diaspora while encouraging them to support one another in their personal and professional journeys.

The Hannover celebration featured cultural activities, discussions, and moments of appreciation for women who have made meaningful contributions within the Rwandan community in Germany.

Traditional music, cultural expressions, and shared meals added to the festive atmosphere, allowing participants to celebrate their heritage while embracing the global message of International Women’s Day.

For many attendees, the gathering was more than a celebration—it was also a moment to reinforce community ties and inspire younger generations to continue promoting respect, equality, and empowerment.

At the end of event , participants reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives that advance women’s rights, leadership, and social progress.

The celebration served as a powerful reminder that wherever they live, Rwandans remain united in honoring the strength and dignity of women and their vital role in shaping a better future for all.
